The USGA has reaffirmed its commitment to driver testing protocols ahead of the 2025 US Open, following failed tests by top golfers Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler. Officials stated that the tests are designed to ensure fairness and equipment conformity, not to penalize players.

Both McIlroy and Scheffler had to switch to backup drivers during the PGA Championship after their original drivers exceeded the legal rebound limits. McIlroy reportedly expressed frustration after news of his failed test was leaked, while Scheffler supported more robust testing standards despite his win with a backup driver.

USGA CEO Mike Whan emphasized that these results often come from wear and tear, not intentional violations. He added that current procedures are essential for maintaining integrity across the field. No changes will be made to the testing protocol for the 2025 US Open at Oakmont.

The USGA also clarified that they will not publicly release test results, citing the importance of maintaining player confidentiality and avoiding unnecessary controversy.
