Court Strikes Down Trump’s Executive Order Punishing Democratic-Linked Law Firm

Judge Strikes Down Trump's Perkins Coie Order

A federal judge has struck down an executive order issued by former President Donald Trump that sought to punish the law firm Perkins Coie over its work related to the 2016 election. The order, which targeted the firm for its Democratic connections and its role in funding the controversial Steele dossier, was ruled unconstitutional by U.S. District Judge James Boasberg.

The judge found that Trump's directive violated the First Amendment by retaliating against the firm for its political affiliations and legal work. Perkins Coie, which represented the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton's campaign, had faced financial penalties under the order.

The ruling marks another legal setback for Trump’s efforts to challenge actions tied to the 2016 election. Perkins Coie hailed the decision as a victory for the rule of law and the protection of attorneys' ability to represent clients without political interference. The Justice Department, which defended the order, has not yet indicated whether it will appeal.
