LeBron James faced questions about his NBA future after the Los Angeles Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs following a 108-106 loss to the Denver Nuggets in Game 5 of their first-round series. The 39-year-old superstar delivered an impressive performance with 30 points, 11 assists, and nine rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to extend the Lakers' season.
When asked about his plans for next season, James remained noncommittal, stating, "I’m not going to answer that." His response left uncertainty about whether he will return for a 22nd NBA season or consider retirement. However, he acknowledged the difficulty of making such a decision shortly after an emotional playoff exit.
James, who has a $51.4 million player option for the 2024-25 season, must decide whether to opt in, negotiate a new deal, or explore free agency. Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka expressed the organization’s desire to retain James, calling him "one of the greatest players to ever play the game" and emphasizing that the team wants to "respect his decision-making process."
Despite his age, James continues to perform at an elite level, averaging 25.7 points, 8.3 assists, and 7.3 rebounds this season. His leadership and production remain vital for the Lakers, who will now enter an offseason filled with questions about roster construction and coaching.
Teammate Anthony Davis, who had 17 points and 15 rebounds in Game 5, voiced his hope that James returns, saying, "He’s been in this position numerous times in his career… We all want him to come back."
As the NBA world awaits his decision, James plans to take time before addressing his future, leaving fans and analysts speculating about what could be next for the four-time champion.
