UN Secretary-General Advocates for ICJ Justice

H.E. Ms. Elinor Hammarskjöld, the UN’s Legal Counsel and Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs, delivered a statement on behalf of the Secretary-General at the ICJ proceedings.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) hearing featured a statement delivered on behalf of the United Nations Secretary-General by H.E. Ms. Elinor Hammarskjöld, Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and UN Legal Counsel. The statement emphasized the UN's commitment to international law and the principles of justice, particularly in relation to the ongoing legal proceedings at the ICJ.  

Ms. Hammarskjöld underscored the importance of the ICJ’s role in resolving disputes between states peacefully and in accordance with international law. She reiterated the UN’s support for the Court’s work in upholding the rule of law and ensuring that legal frameworks are applied fairly and impartially. The statement also highlighted the Secretary-General’s trust in the ICJ’s ability to adjudicate matters of global significance with integrity and independence.  

Additionally, the address touched upon the broader implications of the case under consideration, stressing the need for all parties to respect the Court’s eventual ruling. The UN’s legal team reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to multilateralism and the peaceful settlement of disputes, aligning with the UN Charter’s foundational principles.  

The statement concluded by expressing confidence in the ICJ’s deliberations and reaffirming the UN’s readiness to support the implementation of the Court’s decisions in pursuit of global justice and stability.
